BBC2 - 20:00 - 20:30 Uhr (deutscher Zeit)
Hugh Laurie was best known for playing bumbling British toffs until he re-invented his on-screen persona in the role of House MD – a curmudgeonly, charismatic American doctor in the hit US series House.

One skill, though, that has surfaced throughout his career – from his beginnings with the Cambridge Footlights to now being the highest-paid TV actor in the world – is a facility for music. There are few of his characters who haven't sat down at the piano, be it Bertie Wooster bashing out Minnie The Moocher or House himself performing a duet with a patient.

Now Hugh has finally put his music centre stage. He speaks with Alan Yentob about his album of New Orleans blues and the role music has played in his life and career, and also about why he's attempting the near impossible – to be taken seriously as both an actor and a musician.

Hugh Laurie brings passion for the Blues to PBS
The great Hugh Laurie will transform PBS into a house of blues this Fall when his life-long passion for traditional blues music collides with the small screen, Friday, September 30, as part of the long-running series, Great Performances on PBS stations nationwide. In the one-hour program, Laurie leaves the world of Bertie Wooster, Prince George and Dr. Gregory House behind for a celebration of New Orleans music and the world of Jelly Roll Morton and more. Bringing their collective talents to the program are some brilliant arrangements by Allen Toussaint and genius musical performances by Dr John, Irma Thomas and Tom Jones.

With Laurie, you know it’s a lifelong passion when he says, “If people can rediscover these [blues] geniuses thanks to me, I’d be happy.” I’m guessing after Friday, September 30 on PBS, Hugh Laurie will be happy.
